Why I Started Thrifting + A New Outfit

It’s no secret that the Earth is dying and it’s partially due to over consumption by humans. Over the past two years I’ve started to take a look at my daily habits and how it’s impacting the environment. I try to cut down on plastic wherever I can and try to buy things second-hand when they are available.

I’ve always enjoyed thrifting, but I became even more inspired by my co-worker. She always comes into the office wearing the most stylish outfits and every time I ask her where it’s from she says Goodwill or some other local thrift store. After seeing everything she’s able to find, I decided I was going to start incorporating more second-hand options into my wardrobe as well. Not only has it saved me a ton of money, it also makes me feel better about myself knowing I’m not contributing to over consumption as much as I could be. Small changes can make a big difference!

Now, it’s time for the good stuff. Like my co-worker did for me, I want to help inspire you to shop second-hand more often, so here’s one of my favorite outfits that cost me less than $15.

Yes, those are most definitely the Universal Thread Cut Out Booties from Target that I was able to score for $5 at Goodwill, which saved me a whopping $30.

This gorgeous midi skirt is also from Target’s Universal Thread line and usually retails for around $25. I was able to find it at Style Encore for $9, but since it was missing one of the buttons (easily replaceable) the store manager gave me a 50% discount. So in total, I got the skirt for $4.50!

The teardrop earrings are from Style Encore as well and at first I was a little skeptical about buying earrings from a second-hand store. I always make sure to clean them really well before wearing them and I haven’t had any issues so far. This is the only thrift store I know of that sells earrings, and they usually range anywhere from $3-$10. This specific pair was $3.

Some of you might consider this cheating, but I call it using my resources. Spoiler: The basic white tee is actually from my mom’s closet. Looking through old clothes from your friends and family is a great way to add new pieces to your wardrobe without spending a dime.

After purging my collection I always see if anyone from my friend group is interested before I resort to donating to Goodwill because something I no longer wear could end up being one of their go-to staples!

If you know me, then you know my sense of style is very simple. I love looking at high-end fashion, but when I put it on I don’t feel like it’s very me.

I based my outfit around the button-up midi skirt and decided to stick with neutrals for a work-appropriate ensemble that got me lots of compliments. The teardrop earrings instantly give an otherwise casual outfit a more sophisticated look while the cutout booties tie everything together without being too matchy-matchy.

I love this outfit together, but what I love even more is that each piece can be mixed-and-matched with several other things in my closet. The right pair of shoes can make or break an outfit, and in the future I’d like to try dressing up the midi skirt with heels and dressing it down with Adidas sneakers or converse.

Positive vibes always,

M + M
